A Fence Versus An Ambulance

A Fence versus an Ambulance

A classic poem poses a simple question: If a community lives near a dangerous cliff, is it better to build a fence at the top to prevent falls or station an ambulance at the bottom to respond after a fall?

The same question applies to our health. Let’s examine colorectal cancer prevention.

When it comes to colorectal cancer, the “fence” represents prevention and early detection. Healthy lifestyle habits, including regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, and getting recommended screenings, can help prevent colorectal cancer or detect it at an earlier, more treatable stage.

The “ambulance” represents treatment after the disease has developed. Advanced colorectal cancer may require surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, care from multiple medical specialists, and extensive follow-up care.

While treatment can be lifesaving, prevention is often simpler, less costly, and more effective.

This message is especially important today. Colorectal cancer is increasingly diagnosed in younger and middle-aged adults, many of whom are unaware they are at risk. The lesson is clear: whenever possible, build the fence.

Talk with your healthcare provider about colorectal cancer screening and healthy lifestyle choices to help protect your health.
